Policeman shot girlfriend 5 times but says he had no intention of killing her: Details as it happened in court

An Inspector with the Ghana Police Service claims he had no desire to murder his girlfriend when he shot and killed her at Adum in Kumasi with a service gun.

Only God knows what happened on the day of the tragedy, Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, popularly known as Tycoon, said at the Asokore Mampong District Court while wailing and crying.

On April 20, 2023, at around 9:50 p.m., he is alleged to have shot 26-year-old Victoria Dapaah, also known as Maadwoa, many times in the abdomen and chest.

Police prosecution, led by ACP Kofi Blagodzi told the court the accused demanded a refund of GHȼ5,000 he allegedly paid the deceased at a meeting in the presence of a female friend on the day of the shooting.

According to prosecution, the accused shot the deceased multiple times in the abdomen and chest and fled the scene.

An uncle of the deceased later reported the incident to the police whilst the deceased was sent to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for treatment.

A medical officer on duty pronounced her dead on the same night.

A special police operation led to the arrest of the accused at his hideout at Sekyere near Effiduase in the Ashanti region.

Relatives of the late Maaadwoa broke down in court as they heard for the first time details of what led to the killing of their kin, and it took the intervention of police officers in court to calm them.

Wearing an orange T-shirt over a pair of jeans shorts and slippers, the accused policeman removed his black facemask to speak publicly in court for the first time since his arrest.

This was after the Presiding Magistrate, His Worship Buabin Quansah, asked the accused if he had anything to say after details of the offence were read in English and interpreted in the Twi language.

Amid sobbing and shedding tears, he told the court he had no intention of killing the woman he described as his lover.

He said, only God knows what transpired on the night leading to the shooting incident.

But his plea was not taken.

ACP Blagodzi who led the prosecution said he was appalled by the conduct of the police inspector, whose action has dented the image of the Police Service at the time the administration was working tirelessly to build public trust and confidence in the Service.

He assured the family of the deceased that the police will do everything possible to deliver justice to them.

He pleaded with the court to remand the accused into police custody to aid further investigations.

Inspector Ahmed Twumasi was whisked away on the blind side of charged friends and relatives at the court premises, ostensibly to avert any likely commotion.
